Painted furniture has adorned dwellings from palaces to rustic farmhouse. Like the fashion world of today it has fluctuated over the years but original painted 18th and 19th century furniture will always be most desirable and sought after, as now, it is far more difficult to find. At Antiquated.co.uk American painted furniture is our special love. Pine was the usual wood used for any painted furniture as it helped preserve the wood from woodworm and rot. It was also was less costly than the finer Hard Wood.

The colonies of New York and Pennsylvania were influenced by the Dutch in using tulips and fruit clusters on just a plain back ground of blue red green or black. The marriage boxes and blanket boxes are so rare now and highly desirable especially if it is in its original paintwork condition. Decorative chairs, sofas and daybeds – Chesterfield settees and sofas and Knole sofas are my particular passion. Particularly 19th century or earlier and if the fabric is in usable condition I leave it on intact. Otherwise I reupholster in silk damasks or old linen or grain sacks. I also have Painted Wooden benches from Sweden and France which look really good in hallways or conservatories.

Chests of drawers, Coffers and Boxes – all wonderful for storage, but with original paintwork and lovely to look at .

Dressers and cupboards – a dresser looks great in a modern kitchen or dining area.. especially if the rest of the furniture is all clinical and spotless. This creates a wonderful cameo situation for a painted dresser in the fabulous colours from Cornwall or Ireland. Such colours as blue, green or even pink. Don’t be afraid of colour.

Decorative items – Decorative items include Tin, other metal, wood , stone or Toys. All add character to any room. Decorative items such as tea tins, lead statues (for gardens) or stone ornaments for inside or out and old are my favourite… or even fox terrier toy dogs on wheels … what fun!

Mirrors and Lighting – Very important items in a setting, original gilt mirrors 18th or 19th century add faded elegance to rooms.

Rocking Horses – Another of my passions is for Rocking Horses. Georgian Horses on Bow rockers circa 1820, Victorian on the safety stands which have the Rolls Royce of makers Ayres and Lines Bros. Not so easy to find these days, but I have sold many. I wish I could find more.

Decorative Antique Tables – Tables such as farmhouse, refectory, tavern, cricket, French garden, garden tables, dining, pastry tables and other occasional tables are all popular. Especially if they are in original condition, scrubbed topped with painted bases and distressed paintwork.
